I can see that God has placed writing on my heart. It’s not something I’d call my natural talent, but that just makes it even more of a testament to His power and grace.
When I was eight years old, having battled cancer and finally reaching remission, I felt compelled to reflect on the journey—the grueling chemo, the countless shots, the radiation—and the unwavering faith that carried me through it all. But more than just my own story, I thought about the other children I met in the hospital, fighting the same battle. I couldn’t imagine facing the fear and uncertainty without knowing Jesus.
That’s why I wrote this small flip book—not just to share my journey, but to offer hope to others walking a similar path. I wanted them to know they weren’t alone, that faith could be their anchor through the hardest moments. While the hospital never allowed me to place the book in waiting or treatment rooms due to its faith-based message, that didn’t stop God from taking it far beyond anything I could have envisioned.
At 14, I had already faced battles that most never experience—losing my sight to cancer, learning to navigate an entirely new reality, and refusing to let my circumstances define me. But I knew my journey wasn’t just about me. I felt called to share what I had learned, and that led to Open Your Eyes, a book I co-wrote with McKay Christensen, a researcher focused on happiness, servant leadership, and personal transformation.
Together, we wove my story of overcoming blindness into the inspiring journeys of others who had faced adversity head-on. Through Open Your Eyes, we explore 10 powerful lessons on discovering a happier, more fulfilled life—things like finding strength in setbacks, developing uncommon faith, recognizing the winner within, and unlocking your true potential. This book isn’t just about facing challenges; it’s about reframing them as opportunities for growth, purpose, and hope.
